Why Damaged Soffit and Fascia Shouldn’t Be Ignored

The soffits and fascia may not cover as large an area as the framing or shingles, but they are key components, nevertheless. In today’s post, local roofing contractor A1 Roofing & Construction discusses why damage to these parts shouldn’t be overlooked.

What Are Soffits and Fascia?

The soffits and fascia are roofing components located at the roof’s edge. The soffits are made of boards that cover the gap from rafter tails to the top of the exterior walls. Soffit boards are installed with gaps in between, which serve as intake vents that complement the exhaust vents located at the ridges. Together, they create airflow in the attic that helps maintain heat and moisture levels within. While traditionally made of wood, most of today’s soffits are made of interlocking vinyl or composite boards.

The fascia boards are the vertical boards that cover the rafter tails, perpendicular to the soffits. In addition to adding a finished look to the roof edge and protecting the attic from moisture infiltration, fascia boards serve as the substrate for gutter installation.

Signs of Damage

Both components are exposed to outdoor conditions, therefore they’re vulnerable to moisture damage and other common roofing problems. Fascia boards, in particular, are typically made of timber. They can suffer from rot if moisture makes its way to the areas where gutter hangers penetrate the wood. Some of the signs to watch out for are rusty streaks, which indicate corrosion at the gutter hangers, and blistering paint where it’s visible. While vinyl soffits are moisture-resistant, they’re not safe from the effects of heat and cold; they can warp, crack and discolor over time.

Should You Call for Repairs?

As with any other kind of roofing problem, damage to the soffits and fascia has to be fixed by a roofing professional — the sooner, the better. Continued exposure to outdoors will only result in greater damage, leading to falling gutters and damage to roof insulation and framing. Also, the longer you put off repairs, the more expensive the repair costs will be.

We recommend taking a preventative approach to roofing care. Take the time to visually inspect your roof at least once a year and after every storm, and schedule a roof repair appointment if you find issues. It also helps to invest in durable and rot-resistant materials with long warranty periods.
