The Features & Benefits of PVC and TPO Roofing

In today’s single ply roofing market, the two most popular thermoplastic membrane options are PVC and TPO. It’s often hard to tell them apart since they’re both heat-welded systems. The major differences are on the inside, which impact their performance.

In this article, A1 Roofing & Construction, the top roofing contractor in Tiverton, RI, discusses the features and benefits of each material.

Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC)

PVC has been in use as far back as the 1960’s in both residential and commercial roofs. PVC sheets come about through three main processes: cross weaving, spread coating, or extruding. These sheets contain stabilizers, plasticizers, and other additives, which are responsible for the PVC’s flexibility and firm adherence to the substrate.

The main advantage of PVC is its proven track record of performance. PVC systems that have been on rooftops for over 30 years are still there today. The membranes are able to resist chemical elements much better than most other roof systems. PVC also comes in various colors, though white is the most common because of its energy-efficient qualities.

Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO)

TPO is a blend of ethylene propylene and polypropylene polymers, and reinforced with polyester.

The sheets contain UV absorbers, colorants, flame retardants, and other substances that make it highly resilient.

TPO roofs offer the benefits of PVC roofs, but at a lower cost. This is perhaps its strongest advantage over the PVC system. In addition, it is eco-friendly and 100% recyclable at the end of its service life. TPO is lightweight, appealing, and durable, though for a shorter duration than PVC. This debate remains moot since TPO does not yet have PVC’s well-established track record.
