Metal Roofing Underlayments: Everything You Need to Know

Nowadays, you’ll have no shortage of options when it comes to roofing materials. You can choose asphalt, slate or even clay or concrete tiles. While they’re all good quality roofing materials, there is one kind of material that you shouldn’t overlook: metal roofing. Nowadays, metal is easily becoming one of the most popular roofing materials out there due to its durability and weather resistance. However, this is only possible if it has the appropriate layers of underlayment installed.

Purpose

As stated before, metal roofing underlayments can help make your home durable and resistant against strong weather events. However, one of the main reasons why it’s very important is because it can prevent ice dams if you live in areas that see freezing temperatures. To prevent ice dams, a layer of ice guard is usually added to the underlayment and is installed over the eaves. By adding a metal roofing underlayment with a layer of ice guard, you can keep your attic dry and free from moisture damage

Options

When installing an underlayment on your metal roof, your roofing contractor will give you two options when it comes to material. The first is the most common type of underlayment: felt paper. Felt paper is installed to keep leaks out of your attic and even enhance the insulation by a certain degree. Building codes often recommend that 30-pound paper be used and may sometimes require an extra layer of slip sheet known as rosin paper to prevent the metal from sticking to the felt during installation.

The second kind of underlayment, meanwhile, are the new polymer underlayments, which are thinner and easier to work with compared to the felt and rosin paper combination. Apart from that, polymer underlayments are also strong, waterproof and slick, allowing you to add another layer of protection to your home.
