Keep These Items in Mind When Cleaning & Maintaining Asphalt Roofs

Make the most of your roof’s performance and lifespan, and avoid costly repairs with regular cleaning and maintenance. By taking care of your roof, you also keep your home in good shape.

Learn the do’s and don’ts of asphalt roof cleaning and maintenance here.

Do Not

Use abrasive cleaning solutions – Using bleach will kill the organic growth on your roof as well as the ones on the landscaping below. Harsh chemicals can corrode the metal components of your roof, such as the flashing, boots, gutters and valleys.

Use a pressure washer – A pressure washer can produce streams more than 200 miles per hour, faster than any recorded hurricane. It can loosen, tear and dislodge shingles and remove their protective granules. Never let anyone clean your asphalt roof with a pressure washer.

Do it on your own – It’s best to leave the job to an experienced roofing contractor. Roofing is included in the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America. It’s too dangerous for someone without training and experience to climb up a roof.

Do

Use environmentally friendly cleaning solutions – Ask your contractor to use only eco-friendly cleaning solutions to clean and treat your roof.

Trim overhanging branches, and remove debris – Remove or cut overhanging tree limbs and branches surrounding your roof. It will help keep debris out of your roof and prevent damage during wind storms. Also, it will let more sunlight onto your roof, preventing the growth of certain organisms.

Keep gutters clean – Ensure proper water flow in the gutters and downspouts by making sure they are free from debris. It will help keep your roof dry and protect your home’s exterior.
